Grab it by the ears

Trailer for You Might As Well Live brings back to the spotlight the character of dysfunctional looser that everybody hate. And looser not because of uncontrollable misfortunes and bad luck, but because he is annoying moron that just by his appearance alone is asking for a punch in the face. This independent comedy seems to go far with that image, placing him in some pretty fucked up story.

Robert R. Mutt has never had it easy. His family thinks he’s a moron, the neighbors think he’s a pervert, and almost everyone else thinks he’s a total douche bag. He’s failed at everything he’s ever tried to accomplish, including his own suicide. If that wasn’t enough, he’s just been kicked out of the only place where he’s ever felt at home, the depression ward of the Riverside Mental Hospital… for being too happy. Despite all this, Robert is determined to prove that he’s “a real somebody,” and on the advice of his childhood hero (former local baseball hero Clinton Manitoba), he sets out to attain the three keys to success – some money, a girl, and a championship ring. This sets Robert on a madcap adventure involving a drug racket, a roller-skating transvestite, a bar-mitzvah and an air hockey tournament which leads to heartbreak and unexpected triumph.

Short Animation - Partly Cloudy (2009)

Watch this hilarious, and at the same time very sentimental, short animated film Partly Cloudy, the latest by Pixar that was screened before UP. Not HD quality right now, but that is not suppose to affect the pleasure. Enjoy.

Did someone call for a doctor?

Fun trailer for Fantastic Mr. Fox is here, and it looks like it will be quite fantastic Fall season for the movies. Lots of interesting films are coming out, and this one looks like one of the finest. Very rough, old school stop motion animation with puppets doesn't look smooth and fluid like 3D Disney stuff, but it sure looks unique and nostalgic, although a little creepy too.
Anderson revisiting the classic tale, bringing his own style and blasting each scene with amusing dialogs and huge amount of details on the background. And I think obvious associations to the Ocean's Eleven, because of the heist plot and George Clooney as voice of Mr. Fox, are actually a good thing. The more you watch this trailer, the better it gets.

See the trailer in other HD formats: 720p and 1080p.

Little pig, little pig, let me come in

Going once, going twice, Sold!

The release date approaches (finally!), it's August 7th in selected theaters, and therefore new teaser for the I Sell The Dead appeared online. After hearing about it and building expectations for a year now, this is better be good.

The Horror, The Horror

This is Christian Bale on the set of his new film The Fighter. Bale's ability to change his physical appearance for the roles is known for a long time now, but damn! It maybe not the best picture of him, but he doesn't look very well on others too. See more pics here.

And if I am already on the subject, this is Madonna and Jessica Beil in very unfortunate photos. Bad lightning, ah?

Just to even things up, here is Miranda Kerr, Orlando Bloom's private Victoria's Secret model. When she is not modeling for him, she is posing topless at the beach.

Grey Goose

Brad Pitt was just now in Berlin, at the premier of the Inglourios Basterds, and German magazine BILD did very nice interview with him asking some straight questions and Pitt, cool cat, gave some straight answers.

Here is part of the interview that I liked:
BILD: Have you found happiness in life?
Brad Pitt (nodding): Hm – yes. I am on the path I want to be on.”

BILD: Do you believe in God?
Brad Pitt (smiling): “No, no, no!”

BILD: Is your soul spiritual?
Brad Pitt: “No, no, no! I’m probably 20 per cent atheist and 80 per cent agnostic. I don’t think anyone really knows. You’ll either find out or not when you get there, until then there’s no point thinking about it.

BILD: Are you scared of aging?
Brad Pitt (smirking): The grey hairs on his beard glisten: “No I like it. I think it’s good.”

BILD: Do you find the time to make love?
Brad Pitt (looks puzzled): What?

BILD: Is it sometimes just the two of you?
Brad Pitt: “Yes we make time for ourselves. It’s very important for every relationship.”

Oy Vey!

New film by Coen Brothers is always a major event, and lately they are pushing on gas and making one a year, usually for the Fall release. And since we kind of close, here is a trailer for their upcoming (another) dark comedy called A Serious Man.
Now, it seems, they are taking a shot at Jewish community with inevitable rabbi jokes and massive Jewish women with deep voices. This is one of most psychotic trailers I've seen lately.

Kudos to Quiet Earth for the find. Watch trailer in all kind of HD formats and read synopsis of the film - here.

On behalf of the human race

New extended featurette for District 9, which was probably the biggest hit at latest Comic Con. The film was screened to some lucky visitors at the event, with short presentation from the director, lead actor and producer (Peter Jackson) before that, and received some of the most positive responses from everyone. The film opens very soon and many predict it will be the surprise hit of the year.

Big Bad Wolf

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was one of my favorite games, I mean when I still had time to play video games. And now new installment in the franchise, called simply Wolfenstein, will storm the gamer's community, and I predict it will be very successful.
I already posted some time ago awesome cinematic trailer for the game, and now I found highly stylish short episodes of graphic novel, created as part of game's promotion. This is very cool illustrated animation, using only black, white and red colors. So far there is only 4 such episodes, few minutes each, and you can see them all below.

Creepy short animation with steampunk influences. Watch also the "making of" video here.

Harry Potter Who?

Few Harry Potter cynical parodies.

The real Eiffel Tower

Stephen Sommers, director of G.I Joe visits Paris and shows to everyone that Eiffel Tower still intact, but don't believe him. It was destroyed exactly as it appears in the movie, and what you see behind him is just a CGI. Because movies are for real.

The Land Down Under

Here is vulgar and obscene new red band trailer for the comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, starring Jeremy Piven in the only role he can do so well, and some other familiar funny faces. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are producers of the movie and Ferrell has some kind of a cameo role in it, but he is not in the trailers so far and that makes me wonder if this is a deliberate strategy, because lately his movies are failing in the box office. I think he is not a good name to attach to the movies right now, Piven's glory from Entourage, and the fact he is doing pretty much another Ari Gold, will be enough.

Anyway, I am guessing that the whole point of this movie is to offend as many people as possible using extreme profanity, racial slur, insulting stereotypes, dark humor and sexual indecency. This is going to be a hit among college students.

Movies - Last Seen

The Inhabited Island Part 2, Russia (2009)

Pretty and tall young man with blond hair and blinding white teeth is riding a tank, flying an aircraft and blowing up buildings. But it's ok, you see, he is from highly advanced planet Earth where there is no more violence and the life is very boring, but safe and there is no poverty or need. And now he is on some far and weird planet, where optical illusion makes horizon to be higher and it looks like people live on the inner side of the surface, not outer. The world is inside out, and he is compelled to fix it. The tyranny, the war, the persecution, the killings, the unthinkable methods of depression and brainwashing. And if violence is the only thing these people understand, violence is what they will get.
Written by Strugatsky Brothers half a century ago, popular sci-fi novel Inhabited Island deals with the moral burden of true idealist, witnessing bitter and cynical injustice of epic proportions, and what he decides to do if he has the power to change it. And while the book is a strong and direct confrontation of what is right against what is wrong, empowering the acts of individual against total dictatorship and condemning conformism, the movie adaptation lacks pretty much all of it.
Whether it is loud energetic music accompanying even most boring scenes, epic pathos and extremely serious approach with no self irony, lack of originality in visual style and compositions, or failure to direct the actors in believable way, the movie is a complete mess.
It is hollow shell of chaotic images and screaming actors with no purpose and no interest. The actors cringe and yell like crazy, with spit flying out of their mouth, everything feels so fake, so unnatural, so theatrical. The false grandiosity and forced attempt to give the film some meaning fails miserably, behind countless cliches and many ideas stolen from other movies lies confusing and pretentious film of megalomaniac director.
And the story with the blond guy lost somewhere underneath, behind pointless explosions, banal dialogs and barely understandable plot. Some directors understand when they make a shitty film, but judging from the clueless responses of Bondarchuk in the interviews, he is still sincerely thinking it's a masterpiece and he is misunderstood genius.

3/10

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, USA (2009)

This generic story of slave uprising against the ruling elite creates mostly nausea, and made me shake my head with disbelief all the time I was watching it. Creating a working class hero with enough charisma to inspire the masses and to lead them on the path of revolt against their oppressors takes more than loud voice and secret romance with the daughter of the ruler. I didn't believe for a second in heroic abilities of Lucian, nor in Sonya's attraction toward him.
He and the rest of the actors seem to be misplaced in their roles, not really fitting into the pompous characters, which makes it all look like a big fake. Pathetic try to give this plot some Shakespearean tragedy angle is absolutely laughable, and instead of creating emotional involvement it is just plain boring.
The filmmakers are really trying to convince the viewers that what they see is the real thing, but their forced tactics are more similar to the tactics of a bad car salesman, trying to convince you that the car he shows to you is the best car on the lot, even when it's obviously not.
Well, I am not buying it.

4/10

Little Vera, USSR (1988)

Don't believe the poster, this movie is not about what is written there. It is completely misleading, making it look like the film is a wild adventure of underground culture in Soviet Russia. I even found this poster, in which it may seem like an exploitation B-movie with sex and violence. It is definitely not.
Little Vera is a rough kitchen sink drama about pointless and wasted life of the working class families, about unfulfilled dreams and about strong desire to have more in life than hard work and small apartment.
The rebellion of the youth is not the same as in western films, young Vera maybe similar in her spirit to the typical, coming of age American teens in films like American Graffiti or Grease, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and even having sex at young age, but it sure ain't pink fantasy world. The environment is nothing like fancy cars, disco dancing, singing and burger joints. No, the film's reality is decayed and rotten industrial port city in Soviet Union, just before its collapse.
It is very grim and sad film about what it is like to live in real dystopia, when the social structure prevents any kind of escape from harsh reality, how people's nature is bended and their spirit is broken. This is very powerful anti-soviet film, predicting the fall of communism in Russia, because such reality goes against the very basics of human psychology, and while it can be controlled for a long time by brutal force, it just cannot hold forever and eventually it will fall down.

8/10

The Vanguard, UK (2008)

Nice attempt to make post-apocalyptic zombie movie with strong message about the dark side of humankind, and what we are capable of.
But such pretentious content is a risky business, because with ultra low budget and without much experience, you are destined to look silly at the end.
Bearded guy is living in the forest, killing his time by riding his bicycle and by hunting infected savages with a long spear and pair of hatchets. He is also waiting for somebody and having inner monologues with god. Evil corporations, brainwashed soldiers, lots of running through the woods and many scenes in which all kind of people are pointing guns at each other and talking about doom and death. Blah, blah, blah.
Almost unwatchable and extremely boring in the beginning, getting better in the second half, but just enough to look silly in the end, and not absolutely terrible.

4/10

The Sinful Dwarf, Denmark/USA (1973)

One of the finest examples of 70' sexploitation films, and it actually delivers the goods.
Olaf is a horny dwarf with incredibly grotesque face, and he is running cheap motel with his drunk mother, that once was some kind of a show performer, with singing, costumes and dancing. She is old now, drinking all the time, yet still refusing to let her glory days go. So occasionally she puts up her dresses and makeup, and performs for her only guest, another old and drunk lady that still remembers her from the early days. Oh yeah, they also kidnap young girls and hold them as prostitutes in a secret room in the attic, so they can charge money from men to have sex with them. And to make the girls more submissive Olaf shoots them heroin, which they get from a local toy maker, that smuggles the drug inside the toys. A newlywed couple comes to stay in their motel, and they have some nasty plans for the young and pretty blond wife.

This is highly perversive film, with lots of nudity and rape/sex scenes, done with almost pornographic quality. Twisted facial expressions on Olaf's face you won't be able to forget for the rest of your life, the girls are attractive, and the drunk mother gives very credible and powerful performance as demonic freak, looking at her old face and as result hating everybody who is young. Very clever psychological subtext, believable characters and great atmospheric environment compensate for a silly ending of this, rather interesting B-movie. Any fan of exploitation genre must see this dark and complex film.

8/10

Camping Cosmos, Belgium (1996)

Subtle, intelligent and entertaining cult comedy about human nature and people's desires, which, according to the film, revolve pretty much only around sex.
A colorful group of people are gathered together in the trailer's parking camp, called Camping Cosmos. The name is of course symbolic, since people in the camp are cosmopolitical representatives of human archetypes with all their problems and issues, and it fits the surreal imagery of the movie.
They have different social activities and philosophical discussions, that at the bottom line are trying to find out the reason we ended up on this planet and the purpose behind our existence.
Tons of clever dialogs, many hilarious situations, lots of sex and adultery. The film is very inspiring and deals with heavy content in very light and compelling way, this is truly a must see for anyone that doesn't afraid of smart cinema.
One viewing is also not enough to catch everything that happens in there, but I think any film that features a scene, in which naked sumptuous blond woman (famous Lolo Ferrari) with enormous breasts having her first ever orgasm by listening to a man reading "Tintin in the country of Soviets" comics book, placed in between her spread legs with Soviet hymn playing on the background, is worth seeing again.

10/10

Transsiberian, UK/Germany/Spain/Lithuania (2008)

Boring and confusing attempt to make Americans scare even more of traveling in shady regions of our globe, and especially making acquaintances with shady people.
American couple with intimacy issues and some kind of unclear religious background, traveling from China across Siberia on a train, making friends with, what appears to be, drugs smugglers, and then wonder why they found themselves almost dead, or worse - still alive.
The movie is sometimes intense and thrilling, but not enough and the genre formula is not quite exploited. I would say, this is another result of post 9/11 trauma, depicted also in films like Hostel, where fear from the rest of the world is subconsciously inflicted upon ordinary Americans.
Averagely acted and having so-so story, the film is nothing special, but can be nice stimulant for parents not to let their child go to the trip to far East, or any kind of East for that matter.

Toy Story

Here is extended video clip of the "we are in Paris so who gives a fuck about them French people that will be killed on the way" chase scene from G.I Joe. And to make it even more obvious, it is taken from the French dubbed version of the movie. First 29 seconds is just already seen teaser, but then it starts.
Watching the scene caused me sudden seizure of giggling, which turned out to be full and uncontrollable attack of laughter. This is so ridiculous and bad it's just hilarious to watch.
French mime artist alert at 3:00 mark in the clip.

What revenge have you in mind?

Mind blowing trailer for the new cable TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand is here. This looks like some bizarre combination of Rome, 300 and Gladiator. The result is slow motion violence porn of spilled blood and decapitated body parts, and enough sex scenes to make MPAA censors clinically depressed.

Betrayed by his country. Beaten into slavery. Reborn as a warrior. "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is a graphic and visceral account of Rome’s most famous gladiator. When he’s separated from the love of his life, Spartacus is forced into the gruesome and bloodthirsty arena, where a grisly death is primetime entertainment. Spartacus must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in this new world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. He’ll be seduced by power and tormented by vengeance. But his passion will give him the strength to prevail over every obstacle, in this modern and uninhibited tale of death, honor and endurance.

This sweaty dirty naked bodies extravaganza will air in January on Starz channel. Can't wait.

Lost in Translation

A year ago it was announced that Marvel will start collaboration of a new kind with leading Anime studio Madhouse to adapt some of their comics characters into anime format. Two superheroes, that were selected for the mission, are Iron Man and Wolverine, and they both suppose to helm their own anime series, scheduled to premier at Spring 2010.
And last week at Comic Con, Marvel's panel presented these two teasers for what to expect.

Iron Man trailer is absolutely fantastic with great action and interesting premise, I think his translation into anime aesthetics is very smooth and exciting. There is nothing much to say about him because the trailer is so satisfying and I can only sit and wait for the first episode.

Wolverine, on the other hand, is a different story, simply because the only thing similar to Marvel's Wolverine is the possession of claws. Boyish and gentle look with feminine haircut is really not what fans would expect to see from him. Where is the testosterone dripping, hot tempered, gruff and violent alpha male as we know him? Wolverine's translation to anime created completely different persona, even if he looks like a typical anime character that could be easily absorbed in most of the popular shows. And although he is still going to be a badass, I am sure of that, and we didn't see enough to fully evaluate him, I don't think Wolverine will be the same. Maybe that was the whole point? The animation style is still cool, though, as one would expect from Madhouse studio.

Revenge of the puppeteer

Here is the latest clip from 9, that was presented during the last week at Comic Con. The clip is mostly awesome, but for some reason I am starting to get mixed feelings about the film. Is it going to be one of those projects that anticipation for it is better than the actual watching experience? I hope it's not the case.

A tree falls in the forest

Full trailer for Norwegian horror thriller Snarveien (Detour) is here. The film will be released in Norway next week, and I believe DVD will be available later this year. Judging by the trailer, it's worth to check it out.

Lina and Martin are smuggling cheap booze from Sweden across the border for a wedding party in Norway. At a roadblock, they are told to take a detour, due to an accident. Deep inside the Swedish woods, their car suffers a tire blow-out, and they seek assistance at an abandoned gas station. Soon after, they encounter a girl screaming for help. They assist a policeman in returning the now unconscious girl to a spooky house in the middle of the woods, unaware that they are under constant video surveillance. Unwittingly they have landed leading roles in an Internet snuff film…

Occasional Acid Flashback

This footage from TRON Legacy was shown last year at the Comic Con, the whole three years before the movie hits the theaters and way before the actual filming started last spring. So what is it? My only guess that this is just a trial scene that was made by Joseph Kosinski, the newcomer director that it will be his first feature film after several commercials he did before, to impress the studio and to get the reigns to his hands. I am not sure we will eventually see this scene in the film itself, that will be out only in 2011, but it is a fine example of what to expect. Now it became available to the general public in high quality, and here it is.

The movie is, of course, a much anticipated sequel to the cult pop product TRON from 1982, and it has the potential to became truly cultural phenomenon (Daft Punk are rumored to score the soundtrack). The budget is huge, the interest is big, so expect lots of viral promotion, this is for certain will be box office hit.

Long awaited trailer for Ninja Assassin has arrived. But why through MTV? Their video player cannot be described other than terrible, with awful picture quality. And I heard the Beast say - Come and See

Them trailers just keep dropping, and for some very interesting films too. Now trailer for post-apocalyptic The Book of Eli appeared as well, with unshaved Denzel looking like some kind of a bum, going around and sticking his sword into people's bellies. Oh yeah, he is also carrying some kind of a book, able to save the humankind from its bitter fate, or something like that. Gas masks, chainsaws, ruins and dust, no showers, no Internet. It's apocalypse, alright.

Defined by length and girth

Guardian posted an interview with Willem Dafoe about his controversial Antichrist, that provokes some big outrage in England right now. Posters are vandalized, various journalists are calling to ban the film, some didn't even see it at all but have opinion nevertheless. Hell on Earth. Of course all that noise and publicity works only in favor of the film, which will be released there uncut after all.

Von Trier himself gives an interview to the Times, starting his interview with his opinion about types of male genitalia.
"There are two types of dicks", he says, beginning a brief lecture on the male member that is as frank and quotidian as it is indiscreet. The first type, explains the 53-year-old push-button provocateur, is defined by length. The second, girth. “Willem Dafoe!” he says, anticipating his own knockout punch line, “has a combination of both!" [...]
"We had to cut it out in so many places because it was ridiculously big,” Von Trier says, giggling manically. “It made no sense at all! I mean, if you saw it you would understand!”

Kill the Cheerleader

Apparently some readers here quite interested in Sorority Row, so I'll post another interesting spot for this film, that will be out in September.

One, Two, Freddy's Coming For You

The principal photography of the A Nightmare on the Elm Street reboot was completed this week and promotional stage has started. Number of images for the movie were released, including teaser poster, name banner and image of Jackie Earle Haley as the new Freddy Krueger.
Jackie was just Rorschach in excellent Watchmen, and using his renewed popularity he got that Freddy gig, which will bring him to the new heights of fandom.

The new film is re-imagining of the story, not prequel and not sequel. I'm going to follow this one closely due to some sentimental feelings I have for the franchise.
